Amid challenging times, many UAE companies have implemented hybrid and remote work policies to ensure the safety of their employees and allow them to be closer to their families.

Executives in the HR and recruitment industry note that the corporate environment in the UAE has undergone significant changes in recent years, with businesses now better equipped to adapt swiftly while maintaining operational continuity.

Sanjeev Giri, head of operations at Adecco UAE, stated, “Companies in the UAE are demonstrating a high level of flexibility. Many organizations have already integrated hybrid or remote working frameworks into their operations, enabling them to quickly implement work-from-home arrangements when necessary. Employees are encouraged to work remotely where feasible, ensuring business continuity without disruptions.”

Besides location flexibility, employers are adjusting working hours, streamlining reporting structures, and enhancing internal communication to boost productivity and morale. The focus remains on ensuring stability and reducing stress for employees.

The UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation recently advised private sector employers to take precautions to limit workers' exposure, except for essential roles that require physical presence, and to implement remote work whenever possible.

Nicki Wilson, executive director at Genie Recruitment, highlighted that UAE companies are closely following government guidelines.

“Many private sector employers have either introduced or are in the process of implementing temporary work-from-home policies in line with the current regional situation. This is in line with government advice and school directives urging people to stay indoors whenever feasible,” she added.

Employees stuck abroad

Due to flight suspensions amid airspace closure in the UAE and other Gulf countries, UAE companies are flexible in their approach.

Sanjeev Giri mentioned, “Most companies are handling such situations with understanding and practicality. For employees stranded abroad due to airspace restrictions, employers are exploring the feasibility of remote work and extending temporary work-from-home arrangements as needed.”

He added, “In cases where remote work is not possible, companies are considering options like using annual leave, paid leave, or temporary unpaid leave without negative repercussions. Given the circumstances are beyond the employees' control, the general sentiment has been supportive rather than punitive.”

Furthermore, some companies are enhancing emergency communication channels and crisis response protocols to offer reassurance and clarity during uncertain times. Many employers are recognizing that supporting their workforce during difficult periods is crucial for retention and engagement. “Leadership teams are emphasizing empathy, transparency, and proactive communication,” he stated.

Nicki Wilson stressed that effective communication, providing clarity, reassurance, and flexibility whenever possible, remain crucial during times of uncertainty.
